Choosing the Right Pool Builder for the Job

Research, Research, and more Research

The first thing you want to do in your search of a reliable swimming pool contractor is to ask around. You can find neighbors, family, and friends who’ve had to go through the same process when getting their pools built. Not only will they recommend good contractors, they will also tell you who to avoid. You can also go on websites like Yelp and Angie’s List to see who offers pool services in your area.

Time to Go Deeper

Websites like Angie’s List and Yelp are also good for one more thing you definitely want to see: references. You can read comments from people who’ve previously worked with that company, see what they were satisfied and dissatisfied with. Once you have a list of possible pool contractors, you can also ask them to see previous swimming pool projects they’ve completed and references from their clients. If a company is not willing to show you previous projects or references, that is a big red flag.

Investigate

There are many ways to investigate a business for their legitimacy, like contacting the Better Business Bureau or Association of Pool & Spa Professionals. These organizations will give you much needed information about the company; you can even ask to see if there are any official complaints about the business, and ask if they’re following the state regulations and certifications.

Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs

After talking to the pool company you’ve chosen, lead the conversation carefully to see if there are any warning signs. Most of the time, your gut feeling is right and you probably don’t want to invest thousands of dollars into a company you don’t fully trust. The most common warning signs are:

  • Lack of professionalism
  • Prices that sound too good to be true
  • Asking for a big amount of money up front (usually more than 50%)
  • Asking for the full payment in cash
  • Lack of work place (base office, or a warehouse)

These are all signs that point to illegitimacy and foretelling of a job that will be done poorly. Unless you’re 100% comfortable working with this pool contractor, do not waste your time or money.

Do Your Homework

We all know the saying “if you want something done right, do it yourself”. While in this case it may not be true, because pool building is a big and heavy business, you can still educate yourself to get a better idea of what is happening. You don’t want to leave yourself in the dark about what is being done in your backyard, or what materials are being used. Always ask your contractor to keep you updated, ask questions about the process, and be on top of things to ensure a fine finish.
