We are a top pool builder in Katy and Houston, and we provide some of the best pool maintenance around. When you get a new pool installed in your backyard, one of the first things your pool builder will warn you about is the algae growth.
While the algae itself is not harmful to humans, they do make very comfortable homes for microbes and bacteria that might be harmful. Most of the time, it will just give your swimming pool a dirty look and might make swimming very uncomfortable.
Algae might not be bad for your body, but that doesn’t mean it should stay where it’s growing. If algae are not taken care of in the early stages, cleaning up will be very costly and time consuming later on. It can also get to a point where cleaning won’t be enough, and more costly repairs may have to be done.
There are 3 main types of algae. Each type requires different methods of treatment.
Green Algae
Green algae is the most common type of algae found in pool water. It can show up on the walls of your pool, as well as along the surface of the water in large, floating patches. It varies in severity, and some patches of it might be harder to clean than others. Because green algae grows rapidly, it can be hard to eliminate. On the bright side, once you start, it is pretty easy to eliminate.
Black Algae
Black algae can take over the cracks on your pool surfaces, and it has more of a blue-green shade compared to other types of algae. It is very resilient and can be very hard to eliminate with simple pool cleaning supplies. If you notice anything that you think might be black algae, contact your pool maintenance company or pool service providers in your community.
Mustard Algae
Mustard algae is a type of green algae that happens to be more resilient to chlorine and has a darker, brownish color. This type of algae is slimy to the touch, and it usually collects on pool stairs, ladders, and near lights.
