Enjoying the outdoors in Houston is both easy and difficult. There are so many beautiful locations in our city to enjoy the green, lush, and natural beauty of our wonderful city. However, one of the few downsides to Houston’s beautiful nature is the many mosquitos that find a home in our city. Living in a swampy climate with lots of bayous creates a perfect breeding ground for these pesky bloodsuckers. While 3D Pools and Landscape wish that we had the perfect solution to ridding all of Houston from mosquitoes, it just simply won’t happen. However, we know that many of our clients have had landscaping, outdoor living spaces, and pools installed by our teams and they will struggle with enjoying them because of the mosquito population. This is why 3D Pools and Landscape offer a top-of-the-line mosquito repellent system designed to keep the bloodsuckers out and the fun in! In this blog, we will offer a little insight into how you can naturally try to repel mosquitos in our backyard or outdoor living space while also sharing briefly about the MistAway system that our team installs to prevent a mosquito infestation.
As we said earlier in the blog, there is simply no way to remove the mosquito population completely from your backyard. However, there are a few things you can do to prevent the population from growing out of control. One of the first is to try to always remove or drain all standing water (your pool is not included in this). For example, sometimes families have small kiddie pools they fill up with a water hose, let the kids play, and then leave the pool. This is strongly discouraged as this standing water will eventually become a breeding site for mosquitos. However, mosquitos can also breed in clogged rain gutters, potholes, old tires, and things like tree holes. If at all possible, treat these sites that are cool, dark, and possibly wet in order to reduce the number of breeding sites in your backyard. Some homes have ponds or water gardens installed for landscaping purposes. These are obvious breeding grounds for mosquitos and so one way you can prevent mosquitoes from breeding is to consistently remove algae from the pond. The other defense mechanism that one can use in their pond is to put a mosquito control ring in their pond. These rings contain the natural bacteria that kill mosquito larvae for 30 days! These steps are simple steps that can help reduce the number of mosquitos you have in your backyard living space.
Of course, these steps require a good amount of work as they must happen consistently and to be honest will help only just a little in reducing mosquitoes. This is why 3D Pools and Landscape recommend the MistAway Mosquito Misting System as the best possible defense for the nasty pests that ruin our outdoor fun. MistAway is installed either in a tankless mosquito misting model or the traditional tank model and both are installed by an electrical outlet and a water faucet. 3D Pools and Landscape’s team will then install small nozzles around the property about 10-15 ft away from each other. These will be installed around the perimeter of your property and will set up a clear defense line against the mosquitos. After setting up the system, MistAway then automatically sprays botanical insecticide for 30-60 seconds at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active and other insects like bees and butterflies typically aren’t. As this spray starts to release on a consistent basis, our clients see a dramatic dip in their mosquito population, and hosting an outdoor party on a July evening no longer has to have a lingering scent of mosquito repellent! Should our clients or potential clients be interested in this system, all you need to do is call 3D Pools and Landscape today to get more information!
