Top Pool Trends for 2020

This new year, we’d like to take a look at some of the most eye-catching designs in pool building. As the top pool builder in Katy and Houston, we see a lot of pools. Designs are always changing to bring a home pool to the next level. Here are some of the coolest trends projected for 2020.

  • Sleek, Straight Lines and Shapes

There’s been a slight deviation away from the laguna-shaped pools we’ve come to know so well. With modern architecture emulating straight edges and clean lines, it appears that pool design has begun to do the same. Rectangular pools or pools with modern geometric features have become all the rage. Naturally, there’s something about them that appears classier and more refined. They also can be utilized in better ways for lap exercises or one-depth pools that are even all the way across. We expect to build a lot more of these in the upcoming year.

  • Dark Interiors

Following the same ideas about elegance and refinement, dark interior pools have become more popular across indoor and outdoor settings. These darker pools can help to tie together a specific backyard theme. Possibly, they can add some understated class to an indoor space. They have been used a lot in nature-themed pools as well due to their lagoon-like appearance. In terms of functionality, they have their advantages when it comes to heating, as these pools can be easier to heat than their light-interior counterparts. This is due to dark colors absorbing more sunlight. Dark interiors certainly made their mark in 2019, so we expect to see them in pool builders’ design plans in 2020 as well.

  • Natural/Eco Pools

This pool design is one of the biggest newbies on the block. With the rise of environmental consciousness along with chemical concerns, we’ve seen an uptick in natural pools across the country. Natural pools function without chemicals (specifically chlorine), self-cleaning through micro-organisms in the plant life that adorns them. These pools are a gorgeous backyard feature and can bring some natural elements like flora and riverbed stone right to your home. These pools require lots of knowledge and creativity, but we predict they’ll be stealing the spotlight this year.

  • Swim-Up Bars and Underwater Seating

Built-in bar features have been popular in public resort pools and even water parks, but they’ve also started to make their way into the residential industry. A swim-up bar is one of the most exciting ways to make your pool not just aesthetically pleasing, but functional as well. The possibilities here are endless, and you can even tie your swim-up bar into an overall outdoor kitchen/grill design, or even add some cabana flair. Underwater seating is a given here, allowing guests to sit and soak while they sip on their bar favorites. These seats can be made a permanent fixture and constructed into the grand design of the pool as well. Although this feature may be a bit more costly than your average backyard swimming pool, we think they’ll be a big hit in 2020.

  • Colored Lighting Features/Smart Lighting

With the abundance of smart phones and apps for everything, there are now ways to control and customize both indoor and outdoor lighting. These features have now become more accessible to homeowners with a backyard pool they’re wanting to make the focal point of any nighttime party. With this technology, you can create virtually whatever mood, theme, or aesthetic you want for your pool. Complement this with floor lights and even some along the borders of your pool and you’ve created a gorgeous feature. Since technology is constantly developing and becoming more handheld, we think colored lighting will boom this year.
